Japan and South Korea are accelerating nuclear energy expansion, aligning with U.S. policies to bolster trilateral security cooperation. Both countries have shifted focus toward nuclear energy after decades of reluctance, driven by energy security, climate goals, and geopolitical competition with China and Russia. Japan, which decommissioned its nuclear sector post-Fukushima, now seeks to revive nuclear power as a baseload clean energy source.
South Korea has maintained steady nuclear growth despite political shifts. Their collaboration with the U.S. aims to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), offering alternatives to Chinese and Russian vendors. This trilateral agreement seeks to de-risk nuclear projects, attract private investment, and streamline licensing, positioning U.S., Japanese, and Korean firms as preferred suppliers for regional energy demands.
The alliance also addresses national security concerns by limiting China’s influence in their energy markets. Meanwhile, global nuclear energy faces renewed interest due to AI-driven demand, fossil fuel disruptions, and climate priorities. However, this shift presents opportunities for China and Russia to expand influence over international critical infrastructure.
Traditional nuclear reactors remain dominant, but next-gen technologies like nuclear fusion and SMRs are gaining traction.
